Mr. Merrill J. Bateman came in to rent a car today. our conversation went something like this:
ME: I need your drivers license, sir.
HIM: Here you go...
ME: Hm, your name looks really familiar to me. Did you teach BOM at BYU?
HIM: Yes.
ME: Your name looks REALLY familar, did you write one of the manuals or something?
HIM: Yes. And I was the President of BYU.
ME: oh, hahaha, riiiiggghhttt.... (as in, I thought he was joking...)
long, awkward, painful pause...

I cringed a little for you, too. If it helps, I don't think he was president while you were there, was he? This is further proof of my theory that you have to be on your best behavior at all times when you live in the valley. You never know when you're going to run in to a general authority!
I made sandwiched for both Ty Detmer and Shaun Bradley while workign at a Provo Deli. I made some copies for Merrill J. at alphagraphics when he was Pres (11-ish yrs ago?)...I also did print consulting for Sheri Dew, Chieko Okazaki, and a real estate broker who would one day become my Aunt-in-law. It's a tiny little Mormon world over there.
